The well-liked Davey Derby is coming up at the end of July in Port Renfrew. This salmon and halibut derby runs from Friday 26th July at first light through until Sunday 28th at noon. There is an awards ceremony after the scale closes.
This derby is organized as a memorial to Dave Nicholson. Dave, was a good man and fellow fisherman who passed away in 2000 after a courageous battle with cancer. The folks from Catalyst Paper Crofton Mill, its suppliers and contractors have been strong supporters of this event raising money for the family and worthy local causes.

From the Davey Derby website …
For three years, with the support of all the people who work at the Crofton Mill, our Suppliers and Contractors, and local businesses, we fine tuned our event to the extent that when Dave’s family had found themselves back on their feet again we decided to carry on paying tribute to our friend. We now use all the profits from our event to ensure the survival of our salmon stocks, assist the fine non-profit charities which work so hard to make our communities a better place to live, and make sure that money is not an issue for families dealing with a catastrophic event, loss of a loved one, or dealing with a serious illness. We continue to grow each year and extend a warm welcome to people of all ages who wish to attend our event and join the Davey Derby Fishing Club.
